MONDAY MORNING UP-DATE

NO OIL AND LOTS OF FISH BEING CAUGHT ON �BIG LAKE�

OIL UPDATE FOR SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA

As of this morning BP has put the cap in place and is attempting to divert spewing oil from the well to the surface. We will keep you up-dated concerning our conditions here in southwest Louisiana.

This was a super week of fishing here on Lake Calcasieu. Good catches of big trout as well big numbers of big redfish and solid trout between 16 and 22 inches were caught on plastic as well as live bait. TTF�s killer minnow seemed to be the best bait and the best colors were the EAST BEAST and OPENING NIGHT. Anglers throwing big top water baits like Mirrolurs�s SHE DOG and TOP DOG were rewarded with some solid speckled trout up to 29 inches over oyster reefs. Bone and Chrome proved to be a great color. As the waters of the lake get warmer with the summer heat fish will move into the deeper areas such as the jetties and along the ship channel. Kennel up. Latest news: BP Reiterates Oil Spill Response Transparency.

BP today reiterated its pledge to be open and transparent in its response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. "We are committed to providing the American people with the information they need to understand the environmental impact from the spill and the response steps that have been taken," said BP's chief executive Tony Hayward. As we keep a watchful eye on the terrible oil spill we continue to be mindful of our affected friends to the east. Let�s pray that the authorities get this under control very quickly. At this point we have NO OIL here in southwest Louisiana and don't expect any as of now.

BIG CATCHES WHEN THE WIND SLOWS DOWN

Each day this past week was very productive when the strong south/east wind slowed down a bit. Lots of very solid trout over 9 pounds were common over oyster reefs using big topwater baits like Mirrolure�s top dog and she dog rattlers. Live shrimp continued to rack up good catches of trout and redfish in the 15 to 22 inch range. The whole system is stacked full of small redfish (a result of hurricane Ike) that are 15 inches long. If you like to catch redfish DO NOT MISS the September and October fishing here on the lake because they will be 18 to 20 inches by then. Oil update in the Gulf: NEW ORLEANS (AP) � Researchers say the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico may have already entered a major current flowing toward the Florida Keys. They are sending out a research vessel to learn more. As we keep a watchful eye on the terrible oil spill we continue to be mindful of our affected friends to the east. Let�s pray that the authorities get this under control very quickly. At this point we have NO OIL here in southwest Louisiana and don't expect any as of now.

Now for the really good news: The big girls have decided to come out and show everyone why Lake Calcasieu is the Speckled Trout Capital of the World. In the last few days it seems the big girls have gotten real hungry. A lot of trout from 25 to 29 inches have been smacked for the wall. STRONG SOUTH WINDS PUT A DAMPER ON LAKE CALCASIEU

The BAD NEWS is strong winds have pretty much shut down fishing and catching for the last 3 or 4 days. The GOOD NEWS, this morning the wind is dying and everyone is excited about getting back on the lake.

INSHORE BAIT SHRIMPING season opened yesterday morning and I hear that Steve is catching a good numbers of live shrimp for our fishermen starting tomorrow.

MORE GOOD NEWS We have NO OIL here in our area now but continue to monitor our coast and pray for everyone that is being affected by the terrible tragedy. The Lake Calcasieu estuary that we primarily fish is located in southwest Louisiana just across the east Texas border. Our lake is a river driven estuary from the north and has NO beach access on the south so the only way in and the only way out of this estuary is through the Cameron jetties on the Gulf Coast. The lake is completely surrounded by futile marshes that feed the entire system. We are very lucky to have this situation and if needed can boom across the mouth of the channel to contain what oil that might come our way.
